Creating Yourself?

Today I asked my students to reflect on the following quote. The response was more divided than I'd predicted it would be. So now I'm curious as to how other people see it! Anyone willing to share your thoughts?

"Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself."
~George Bernard Shaw

I agree with this statement because people can change throughout their lives. They are not stuck to what they used to be or are now. Finding yourself implies you have no chance to grow, but I believe that creating yourself encapsulates the idea that we all can be better people through our own will and work. If we are going to change it is up to us, no one else. Right?

This is a fantastic quote.
I think it get's to the heart of life's questions... a person is not predetermined to become anything - good or bad.
It doesn't matter what background we come from, what influences we've had, or what we've done in the past. There comes a point in everyone's life where they have to decide what it is that they want to become - how they will choose to live their life from that point on. It is an individual decision that no one can make for you.

Well, I'm right here! ... Where am I going.. And, why? Finding the answers to how we will create ourselves is much different than finding ourselves. "What lies behind us, and what lies before us, are tiny matters compared to what lies within us." What lies within us is what we create!

Although, with the art of wonder, there is no real truth to any of this! :)
